<description> If you're gonna be part of a community of people that are like-minded, do try to show up and go be a part of the community. Contribute in some way. There's a lot of value that you can get out of it and there's a lot of value you can bring to it without even knowing that you're bringing value to it... There's been a lot of moments in my life where I've realized I've either said something or done something for someone and there's like a lightbulb that goes off, right? And you see that lightbulb go off for that person and you're like "Oh, wow, I actually helped that person get on their path to achieving something that they wanted to achieve" and that's really cool. It's really rewarding, and I would encourage anyone to go out and just be a part of a community even if it's not programming.
Hosts Karin Thorne and Kelly Corey chat with Joey Buczek about his experience balancing family, work and teaching at a coding bootcamp along with his work ethic philosophy and how he started the SyrJS Meetup. Joey also shares his greatest programming resource with us and we pitch more ideas for Syracuse tech Meetups.
This episode is part VIII of our series: Catching Up with Careers in Code! We chat with founders, instructors/TAs, and students of the first CiC cohort about their experience and where they'd like to see the program go in the future.

<description> One of the main things I love about my job is the community. Being able to go to these events and call it work when it's really just socializing and networking and building those connections. The same thing goes for flying. There's a really big community around aviation that people are drawn to for that reason. You go to these little events that are like the dev Meetups we go to, and I love that, so community building has always been a big thing for me... So it makes me very humble to say I get to do this for a living and I get paid to make these connections.
Hosts Karin Thorne and Kelly Corey chat with Will Guisbond about his experience working as an Operations Intern at such a young age and the importance of building community. We also go behind the scenes of Hack Upstate and Careers in Code and we learn about Will's plans after graduating high school.
This episode is part VII of our series: Catching Up with Careers in Code! We chat with founders, instructors/TAs, and students of the first CiC cohort about their experience and where they'd like to see the program go in the future.

<description> I would say using teaching as a way to get better at something is a really good approach. And I would say that if you don't have a lot of knowledge, you shouldn't think you can't teach. I'm very much a proponent of ... being able to take ideas you have and using them to kind of affect your surroundings. And I think that teaching is a great way to do that.

<p><em><strong>My big advice is...work backwards. Because it&#39;s so easy to learn all these tiny little concepts in programming. And it&#39;s cool and you&#39;re excited while you&#39;re doing it but at the end of the day, it&#39;s not an end result. And so, my big advice is have your end goal. Figure out where you want to end up and then work your way backwards from there.</strong></em></p>
